Building the Cage for the Four Feral Cats

Prelude by the Male Human

After a lot of decisions over the last few years, ‘The Cage’ is finally built. Initial designs included enclosing the front porch, fully-lining the garage), or building on TOP of the garage.

These ideas haven’t been scrapped -- but have been put off until finances make them possible. So they may not happen any time soon...

The whole project took about four months. With the construction being done by ourselves, my father, and the skills of a qualified carpenter, it was orginally planned to only take a few weeks. Thankfully we had access to an electric band-saw!

Anyhow, the plan had the cat-run built around the back of our garage. Should we ever sell, it could also be used as a fernery or aviary.

It will also eventually include a tubular run to go from the rear-pergola to ‘The Cage’ connecting from a window at the rear of the house.

Dimensions

Rear: A long corridor behind the garage, allowing us access from the rear yard.

Land-dimensions: 12,000mm long x 800mm wide..

Side: This adjoins the neighours wooden fence. The area is open to the front of the property. The fence is bolted to steel poles imbedded in a concrete retaining wall. We built the retaining wall up about 600mm, bolting a wooden frame up to the top of the garage (approximately 3,000mm high).

Land-dimensions : 2,000mm x 10,000mm

All measurements approximate and possibly exaggerated.

Photographic Time-Line

Very shortly, the male human will put up a series of photographs that were taken during the construction of ‘The Cage’. Sigh. He can be slightly disorganised sometimes. Look out for this great event.
